Passaic River Greenway

Photograph of a riverbank with several ducks and geese near the water's edge, surrounded by dense green trees under a clear blue sky. The scene highlights a natural, serene environment with sunlight filtering through tree branches and a mix of rocky and sandy shore.

Riverside Park & Playground, located along Presidential Boulevard between the Arch Street and West Broadway bridges, has the potential to be transformed into an ecological and educational landscape along the Passaic River that supports a vital community as a part of the Passaic River Greenway. This project will explore how thoughtful design can celebrate the river’s cultural and ecological history while strengthening physical and visual connections to the Passaic River, the Northside neighborhood, and the Paterson Great Falls National Historic Park.

Design strategies will focus on enhancing recreational opportunities and creating inclusive spaces that serve a diverse range of users, supporting community health and well-being, and strengthening access to the riverfront. The concepts will incorporate opportunities for environmental education and interpretive elements that highlight the ecological significance of the Passaic River and examine nature-based solutions that improve site resilience while contributing to the overall user experience.

Through these design concepts, Riverside Park & Playground will be reimagined as part of the Passaic River Greenway with active and meaningful riverfront spaces that reconnect people to the Passaic River and support long-term environmental and community goals.
