Rutgers Climate Bridge Panel 2: Impact on Place
Abstract
How can landscape architecture create convivial urban space integrating challenges that are results of climate change? Highlighting a small number of projects in western Germany this talk gives insight into the strategies and design thinking of urbanegestalt landscape. A street without cars but an urban carpet in the city of Neuss.A green-blue city square on an urban brownfield in the city of Cologne. A blue-green industrial area in the harbor of Bremerhaven. A climate garden in the city of Schwerte.
The four displayed projects are all commissioned by public authorities and showcase not only landscape solutions but also different stages and means that are part of strategic climate mitigation concepts. Landscape architecture creates spaces for debate. We will change our lifestyle and we will gain more qualities then we will have to give up habits. Landscape architecture creates convivial urban situations that bring in community and neighborhood. Landscape architecture helps to create inclusive development that is effective more than efficient. Parks and gardens that teach people to live in a new relation with nature might become the next big topic of landscape architecture.
