Abstract
The words “keep the water out” were driving forces behind the Green Network group’s design. Not only did this contrast to the Atlantis group’s focus to “let the water in,” but it also brought attention to the ecological aspects of Atlantic City that are often looked over. When thinking of Atlantic City, it usually hones in on the casino life, but our group wanted to develop a more sustainable city that had an intertwining green network throughout the city. This would invite more tourism but also invite them beyond the casino district as Atlantic City has far more to offer. With this in mind, there was a push to expand on the amount of green space within the city; it would improve the pre-existing green space and build upon it. This green network would only be successful with the community garden and pocket park initiative.
These two designs would tie everything together as they serve as meeting point, educational outlets, and common grounds for the residents in Atlantic City as well as the visitors making their ways along the network. Finally, the whole reason that the green network and the pocket parks would exist would be because of the sea wall being placed all around the north shore of Atlantic City. This sea wall as well as the flood gates to stop the water from flooding the city provide a framework for the rest of the design as it protects the city and the people living in it from flooding.
