Meadowlands District Stormwater Management

Photo of Flooding in the Meadowlands District, July 5, 2006.

The Meadowlands District is subject to frequent flooding events as the result of decades of alterations in the natural water flow patterns of the Hackensack River estuary and the effects of a changing climate. Flooding in the District results in negative impacts on the general public and the Hackensack River when Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) discharge untreated sewage into the River, as well as financial losses to local businesses when major roadways become impassable. To address the District's flooding issues, the NJMC commissioned Rutgers Environmental Research Clinic to review their existing data and to recommend solutions for management of stormwater flows within the District.
